Los Angeles Family Photographer { DSLR for family Photos} : FAQ

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

One of my favorite client whom I  just photographed his first born e-maild me the other day to ask for my advice. I spent some time answering his questions via e-mail so I figured I should blog about it as well so everyone else can benefit from. My client is a lawyer, a very smart person. He had done his research so he kind of new what he wanted but he wanted my point of view which I very much was appreciated.
1. He didn’t want to spent too much money. His budget was $500
2. He wanted to know what kind of SLR to buy to photograph son?
3. Nikon vs. Canon?
I am not going to bore you with technical terms. The guys at Digital Photography Review do wonderful job at it. I am just giving you a my point of view as a professional photographer. It is true that higher-end cameras produce better quality image files (Ha! but not always make the  better pictures though) ,but for your candid family photos these entry level DSLR should do their job. You need to learn how to use your tool. None of these cameras should take blurred photos of your kid chasing after the dog.  And photographers what I am about to write is very basic entry, please do not send me angry emails about the technicality.  I have a degree in commercial photography but I am not writing my thesis here. I just wanted to make it super simple for the people who are shopping for holiday.

1. It’s more but buy the newest one that you can afford, but the newest one isn’t always the best one. There may only be very small differences like size of MP which isn’t so important. Buy the next one at lower cost usually they offer pretty good discounts on older models. Digital technology changes so often and the digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras have shorter life spend than the old film SLR cameras. To me it makes sense to buy newest one you can afford. Buying photographer’s back up equipments are also very good idea. They are usually well taken cared of and used very lightly.

2. MP-Megapixels are not as important as ISO
: Manufactures are keep adding the megapixels to make you think as though they are worth spending your money on. Well, it’s good to have if you are into blowing up your pictures to the size of billboard or to use them as a mural at your home but 3megapixels were enough to print 8″x10″ size photos couple of years ago. Now you get the idea?
ISO/ASA was used to indicate the film’s sensitive to the light. Meaning if the film had a higher ISO it would react faster to the light. Therefor you can still take nice pictures in low-light situations. Now in digital camera ISO is used to indicate the camera sensor’s sensitivity to light. You basically want the camera that can give you the higher ISO number that you can afford. This means you don’t need to use a flash to light your subject. Well, it’s a personal preference. Do you want to know more about MP, ISO and lighting? You can take my photography workshop next time. Please check for blog update or email me about my classes.  These classes will be offered at my Brentwood Studio or on a location. [email protected]

3. Buy the package if there is a package offered with the DSL body and the lenses. Though the lenses included in these packages are not so great, but the wide angle lenses such as a 18-55mm comes handy when you travel. However for those nice blurred background portraits, you will need a lens that is longer than 85 mm. You can use standard 50mm lens too but generally 85mm and up are considered as a portrait lens on a 35mm camera. Lenses try to stick with same brand as your body, but I like Tamron lenses as well.  If you can get lenses that can cover 2Xmm -1XXmm  with  smaller f number (Aperture) that you can afford to or even 2xx will be great.

4. DSLR requires much more accessories than the point and shoot cameras.  So If you are not going to take time to really learn what your DSLR can do,  just buy higher-end point and shoot camera ! I can assure you that you will be surprised what you can do with these little cameras.  They can even create HD videos so you can always capture those precious moments of your kids in short video.  Canon powershot G11 is often used by professional photographers as well.  Nikon P3000 is equally good.

5. Where to buy? Internet store vs. Local Camera Store
I suggest going to local Camera stores and ask them to match the internet price because they can help you when you need to have your camera serviced.

So here is simple ABC steps to buy your new camera.

a. Go to manufactures sites to see which camera came out most recently. I suggest Nikon because I believe that Nikon has more affordable consumer level DSLRs than Canon at the moment. Both brands are equally good . As of today these two cameras seem to be the ones that are suitable for your family portrait need.

Nikon USA
Nikon D3000

Canon USA

Canon Rebel Xsi

b. Do your research, read the consumer reviews such as on Amazon.com or google

c. Stick with your budget.
Especially when you go into the camera store, the sales person will try to sell you many accessories as possible. Just stick with your budget.
One thing you must buy! Please buy the lens filter. Just a glass filter should do since you are not buying super expensive lenses. It doesn’t have to be super expensive ones. I suggest Tiffen or Hoya filters. This is just to protect your lenses from scratched. You can upgrade your body every few years but you can keep using these lenses  until you have enough money to buy really good lenses.  Maybe I will talk about Optics on my next entry about photography. Please send me your questions via facebook or e-mail. I will try to answer them within my knowledge.

Happy Shopping!

You all know that I am a foodie but this image deserves first place because I couldn’t have done this party without my friend, Jean. She took care of all the food for me. It was like having a professional caterer.  Thank you darling xoxo!  Her red velvet cup cakes were to die for.

Rock of my strength.

Back from the Friday Harbor

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

I am back from my two weeks journey. Refreshed and encouraged. For next few days. I am going to try to tell you little more about my trip but I need to catch up on my life here in LA. For now, I am going to have these photos to tell you the story.
This is the last image that I captured in workshop before I left the island.
Friday Harbor is the kind of place that you would like to just sit and soak up on the beauty of life.

Accepted to Rod Dresser San Juan Island Workshop

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

I haven’t blogged much lately because I was following the doctor’s order to refrain from using my shoulder including using the computer mouse. I have a small tear that inflamed after last weekend’s wedding. I feel much better now and I am back in front of my working station. Besides shoulder injury there has been numerous of bad things happening in my life “when it rains, it pours” To be honest, I was little discouraged to do anything for a while. I knew that the things will always get better in the end so I waited patiently.
Today, I received an e-mail that I was accepted to Rod Dresser workshop which I applied few months ago. I am so thrilled that I am going to spend 5days with him, Maggi Weston and 5 other great photographers learning more about Fine Art B&W photography. My dear friend Jennifer Lepkowski will be there as well so I am very excited. Rod Dresser takes six students on tuition free B&W photography workshop at the San Juan Island every year. If you are passionate about Fine art B&W photography, you should definitely try to take one of his workshops.
Here is one of my favorite image from the B&W portfolio that I submitted to him.

Are you equipped for this season?

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

I found this image of me that was taken by my friend back in 2004 and I had a good laugh.
I promised that I will try to post something for many aspiring photographers out there so here is my very first attempt. I still consider myself as an aspiring photographer so it will be mostly about the lessons that I learned as I was starting out and something I picked up from watching other great photographers for past 5 years. There are many useful forums online nowadays, so I am not going get too technical with my entries. I hope you find it useful somehow.

So my very first post title is
#1 Shoot light
Shooting with minimum gear on yourself gives you mobility. This also allows you to focus on one thing and one thing only while you are on the job. That is to capture true moments. A good photographer captures the moments as the day unfolds.

Can you see the amount of gear that I have on me here? I was second shooting for my friend that day so I believe I had less on me. LOL !!! This Wedding was held in mid summer afternoon at the Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills. Greystone Mansion and Park offers many beautiful location to shoot, but the ceremony was at noon so we chose to use fill flash. But I probably did not need mighty Quantum Turbo power pack. (I will elaborate on fill-flash on another posting) When you are new in this industry it is nice to be over prepared then not prepared. And please bring your back up gears and leave them in the car safely. At the time we were new and we weren’t able to instantly check what we were shooting with film cameras, so we equipped ourselves with everything we had then. Even now, I always bring my light meter with me even if I don’t use it.
Here Tammie is wearing;
Nikon F100 with Nikkor ED 24-120mm f/3.5
Nikon N80 with Nikkor 85mm f1.8
Quantum Turbo battery pack with SB-80 Speedlite
and think I am wearing another not so fancy belt purse for films.
I think having two camera bodies on yourself as you shoot wedding is generally a good idea. Especially, if you are shooting alone. We can now just switch ISOs on digital cameras but I still do at times because I can quickly switch my lenses this way. I now have a cool Shootsac, so I try to go to my job in style now.
I am not a big fan of long lenses. Don’t get me wrong, I own one and I love milky blurred look ,but I find that I don’t get it out much unless I am shooting at outdoors where I have a lot of room to move around. I am strong and I can lift heavy things pretty well.( I move house furniture all by myself) But I am only 5’4″ and having heavy gears on me for 10 hours is really hard on my body so I came up with a solution . That is to shoot with a fast prime lens. I can still get “bokeh” ( means blurred in Japanese also means demantia and senile- can you see the relations here?) and gain my mobility back. Prime lenses are now very popular among wedding photographers. Using a prime lens means that you need to zoom yourself in and out instead of a lense. This also challenges you to be more creative with your composition. Hey, I can always use more cardio! so this works for me.
Here are list of some good prime lenses to have: I will just list Canon lenses here. If you are on budget or own a different system you can just take notes of the length of lenses (mm) and the brightness of the lens (f-stops) then get similar items that fits your budget. I own few Tamron lense for traveling and I highly recommend them.
Canon EF 24mm f 1.4L
Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 or on big budget 50mm f/1.2 L
Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 or on big budget 85mm f/1.2 L II
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro (my favorite lens along with 50mm f/1.4)
Canon EF 135 f/2L

Little office update: with extra Ram added to my PC. It’s not flying but it’s working fine. I’ve decide to maintain current condition until I finish editing all the images for my website. Andy is dying to build new PC for me, but I can’t afford to not have computer for few days!
