“You can shed tears
that he is gone.
Or you can smile because he lived.
You can close your eyes and
pray that he will come back.
Or you can open your eyes and
see all that he has left.
Your heart can be empty because
you can’t see him.
Or you can be full of the love
that you shared,
You can turn your back on
tomorrow and live for yesterday,
Or you can be happy for tomorrow
because of yesterday.
You can remember him and
only that he is gone.
Or you can cherish his
memory and let it live on,
You can cry, close your mind,
be empty, and turn your back.
Or you can do what he would

have wanted, smile, open your

eyes, love and move on.”

I am very sadden by this news but I believe he is in better place now.
Death of a friend sneak into our lives more often than we think then you realize how often we ignore chance to pick up the phone and say hello

In Memory of Rod Dresser  who was an amazing artist, my teacher and a friend who passed away yesterday.

You are the reason I still haven’t given up my film cameras

You are the reason I still have hopes

It was truly an honor to know you and learn from you

Rest In Peace Rod.

Since I made big deal about attending friend’s wedding as a guest on my social media page for weeks, I thought I’d share few images with you from this beautiful wedding.  I intentionally leave my professional gears at home when I attend the event as a guest.  Being a photographer is my profession and I love what I do but I just end up shooting all the time if I have a camera in my hands.  Not having full professional photographic gear stops me from being “that” photographer.  Now no judging here…I enjoyed watching old friends getting married and captured few moments that caught my eyes.

I am also trying to tell aspiring photographers that you don’t need to dig into your child’s college fund to buy 8K pro-level camera.  Do they produce better image files? Yes of course! actually it’s great to have such a powerful machine.  However if you don’t really learn how to use it, know that it can work against you.  Once a respected photographer confessed during his seminar that he has been using “P”-mode on his camera (program mode: your camera chooses exposure for you but you still can control few other manual functions. It’s very similar to Auto mode)  Well, there is nothing wrong with that because his photo-journalistic images are beautiful. He captures emotions. I forget to focus on capturing essence of people because the wedding is such a fast moving event and I have so much to cover.  But this time it was much easier to do so at friend’s wedding. I know what you are thinking, was Tammie being a “photo bomber” at this wedding?  The answer is no.  As a photographer I watch where the other photographers are. I should say I watch everything that goes on at the wedding.  I usually introduce myself to the main photographer if I am shooting at friend’s wedding.  A special thank you goes to the day of photographer, Susan Sabo for allowing me to capture these moments. This is just a right way to do it. I was as far away as I can be and some images are shot in between the uncles and aunts shoulders. It was rather cute to watch them pointing cameras at bride and groom through out the ceremony.

Congratulations Melody + Mike, looking forward to watch your family grow with love!  We really enjoyed being part of your special day.  Melody and Mike chose The Condor’s Nest Ranch in Temecula as their venue. It suit their laid back personality and they added much of their style to the details of this wedding.  Melody’s talented friend Jaconie Events and her team did an amazing job creating this fun and elegant event.

Photography Workshop { Kevin Kubota Digital Bootcamp }

Friday, October 21st, 2011

I owe this blog entry to many great people who changed me and my business last year.  So better late than ever I’ve decided to write it. I hope this also helps many new photographers entering this industry. Last year I won scholarship to Kevin Kubota Worshop. My preview hosting site SMUGMUG and my Lab Bayphoto funded this scholarship.  Here is my BIG belated formal thank you!!!  All of you who enable me to run my successful business.

If you know me,you probably know that I value education very much.  I entered myself back into photography school after leaving my career in corporate America.  Everyone told me I could probably just start taking pictures of people and assist few wedding photographers to start my own business.  Now, there is nothing wrong with that kind of education but I wanted more. I believe good education will pay off  ten fold someday.  So I went to photography school for 2 years. I practically lived in the school studio and the darkroom.  Everyone in the department pretty much know me by first name.   When I ran out of things to study and the teachers told me to get out I finally left the school. I wanted to be “ready” before I start charging people for my work. That wasn’t enough so I assisted very successful photographer who mentored me for 5 years while I worked as a freelance photographer.  After I finished school, I hesitated to pay for another costly workshops except for attending annual convention for many years.  I’ve gone to small workshops and seminars but I never really invested more than 3days.  I was hitting 8 years mark in my career and I was thirst for more so winning this scholarship was like ray of sunshine!  Spending 5days with other great photographers in Oregon and learning from amazing industry leaders was like a honeymoon all over again.  It is called “Bootcamp” so no it’s not exactly a vacation. So be prepare to learn if you plan on attending. There are too many things to share and my writing skills aren’t that great. It’s probably best for me to break it down.  I think best way to evangelize is to show you that my life has changed.  So If I can plan a New York vacation for whole family in two days, you shouldn’t have problem flying yourself out to New York  for this wonderful workshop on October 24th, 2011.  Or plan ahead and sign up for next one. Booking one of these action packed workshop will really change your life. Looks like Doug Gordon & Kevin Kubota teamed again this year, so you are lucky!  Most of attendees of this workshop made quick changes in their business and they are seeing the changes. We still keep in touch via facebook and I must say gaining their friendship was another valuable gift I received from this workshop.  but it’s still working progress for me. More changes are to come next year for me.  I hope you watch me closely and encourage me via twitter or facebook.

My day began at 6:30am everyday.  Five Pine Lodge in Sisters, Oregon is just simply beautiful!

Wish I had images of their charming cabins which had amazing bathtub.

These two images are processed in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.  Kevin Kubota thought me few good tricks and it’s been a life saver!

I like my images as natural as possible.

After adding little bit of Kubota’s Dragon Power.

What a better way to teach than this !

You see that these images are bit different from my style that you are used to seeing on this blog? Yes that’s right!

Not sure if this is the style that I like to stick with  but taking a workshop like this definitely inspire you to do more.

All of these images are retouched using Kubota Actions

Another talented instructor Bejamin Edward‘s beautiful wife Lauren during the “trash the dress” session

Doug Gordon such a passionate instructor. It was passed midnight but we were still going…(He is in Eastcoast time so go figure!)

I had to have a tourist photo of myself ! Thank you Ruth for taking this photo- I miss you very much.

CAMERA: Mamiya 645 PRO

FILM: Fuji 160 NPC

I just got this old film developed from RPL in Los Angeles. They do magnificent job at making sure my films are develop to good standard.  No wonder they work with my big name photographer friends like Jose Villa and Tanja Lippert.  I started RPL since I started out 10 years ago then I switched to digital. However went I went back their service hasn’t changed at all. I may not be their VIP but they have always been very professional with me.  It’s fortunate that I live in L.A but we often get treated badly at some professional labs that handle big name photographer’s work. I thought I’d pick up my medium format Mamiya again to inspire myself.  This roll was just a test to see if the camera is okay.  Found few eye candies to post it here. I was bit worried about sending in this old roll in to process wondering it’s even worth a money.  It’s been sitting in my film camera bag for few months, but I think they turn out alright. Thank you RPL!  (It’s better to develop your film immediately after your session)  Here is picture of my friend Leslie standing in for me while we were location scouting few month ago. She may not necessary like herself in this image because only shot 2 frames and she is not wearing any make-up here but my friend you are beautiful inside and out. I am contributing this post to you and your father my friend.  Hope to see you soon!

Personal: Let their voices be heard

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

We took last minute family trip to New York last week.  It was bit of interesting week to be in Big Apple for many reasons. For one, I had an opportunity to photograph few historic moments. I love photojournalism. I thought I’d post on my blog to help these demonstrators. There were many independent photographers and reporters documenting this protest. I am not a political person by all means but I am thankful for those who take time to fighting for our rights. However there were many mixed messages being shouted. I found this interesting article on Huffington Post who is much better writer than I am.  Please take time to read to get a feel of this protest. I am proud to be American where we have freedom of speech. I was born and partly raised where we still have some limitations, I can only admire these brave souls on the street.  One thing I noticed all of NYPD were so nice, there was no intense feelings there what so ever while they were doing their job to protect us. So are demonstrators. I thought this post deserve to be posted before my tourist images. I hope you enjoy.
